Dear Volksriders, a new thread for forummers to see and view how VW s were made back in the good old days......

first all vw s came in as pure sheet metal either rolled or cut into specific square pieces... pictures here are taken from the archives and many a vw history book....

here in this shot at the factory at Wolfsburg those days...the metal pieces were lined up in a section prior sending to the pressing machines.......here you can see the top of the kombi roof already pressed out to shape...

these were the huge machine press back then..before the word automatic machine set up came, good ole workers actually carried the piece by hand and placed it in the lower section of the pressing machine...then from above the metal would be pressed to shape..in this shot the roof top is formed.....

TO BE CONTINUED... :P

In that same manner every single large item was pressed into shape and curve...this is what made the vw lasting from the strong thick sheet of metal (the were specifications as to width for each part pressed..the doors had 2 presses outer layer and inner layer.. here you can see the inside panels for the vw door and the MASSIVE presses behind..

if you see clearly, after being pressed the roofs are further inspected for any dents from excess metals , so rigid was the quality control back then.....how to tell, there are side marks made very fine lines..

Here the machine presses out the front dashboard for the ovals....wow if only we could get our hands on 1 or 2 of them......can do nice conversion together with the roof.....

the front bonnets....pressed out and left in this section.Note vw makers produced the parts and each item was left in a specific designated spot so that when assembling, it came step by step...those days no automation so they pushed them on wheel carts stage by stage......

the floor pans were also made...note those square embossing...reason was to ensure rigidity rather than a flat piece at the bottom of the bug...

The body is mated with the inner front panel by means of welding and this shot is an example how the front is combined to the frame......

this shot shows the bodies combined (without wings and bonnets) moving on a conveyor belt system...those days this was not common for mass producing an icon to come...
